No. 5 Women's Ice Hockey Finishes Season With NEWHA First Round Loss to No. 4 LIU

SYOSSET, N.Y. - The fifth-seeded Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team fell to No. 4 Long Island University, 7-0, on Wednesday during the first round of the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Tournament at Iceworks to close out its season.

  • Simons became the first goalie in program history to recorded more than 1,000 saves in a season (1,028) while passing Abby Burke '17 (1,471) for seventh in career saves in program history (1,483).
  • Simons' season save percentage (.919) and season goals-against average (3.25) both rank fourth in program history, while her career save percentage (.917) and career GAA (3.38) put her in second behind Tina Frasca '17 in both categories.
  • Simons remains first in NCAA Division I, II and III men's and women's ice hockey in saves this season, and ended the year nearing the top 25 in NCAA Division I/II women's ice hockey history for season stops.
  • Senior defender Alissa Sullivan (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) finished her career first all-time at Saint Michael's in career games (107), having never missed a game in her four-year career. Sullivan ended up tied for seventh in assists (26), with the most ever by a defender, and senior Arianna Boscia (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy) tied for ninth (25).

THE ACTION

  • The Sharks scored the game's first goal with 7:15 gone on a power play when Umpherville brought the puck up the right side and shot over the glove of Simons.
  • The Sharks extended the lead 13:52 into the period when a pass by first-year Abby Latorella started a 2-on-1 that ended with Johnsson shooting the puck into the back of the net.  
  • With 2:20 gone in the second period, junior Krista Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass./East Coast Wizards) passed the puck from behind the net to classmate Lizzie Blanchard (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford), who brought the puck to the front and shot, but Harmison pushed the puck away.
  • The Sharks scored with 9:08 gone when a pass by Thomsen from the left circle into the slot for af Bjur, whose shot went to the top right corner of the net.
  • Meyers scored two power-play goals 1:23 apart later in the period, with the first coming after hitting in a loose puck in front of the net at 14:05 and the second by tipping in Shauer's shot from the blue line with 15:28 gone.
  • Thomsen received a loose puck on the top of the left circle and scored a one-timer with 17:49 gone, capping a stretch of four goals in 8:41 and three in 3:44.
  • Scott scored the Sharks' final goal of the game with 6:45 gone in the third period when a power-play shot by Meyers was saved by Simons, but Scott hit in the rebound.
