GAME FACTS

  • SUNY Potsdam improved to 5-1-2 since a 5-8 start, with its only loss coming against SUNY Plattsburgh, the No. 1 team in Division III, during that time.
  • Saint Michael's limited the Bears after yielding eight goals during their first meeting on Nov. 19.
  • This was the Purple Knights' 10th game this season decided by two goals or less.
  • The Purple Knights returned from a nine-game layoff, having last played Jan. 25, while opening a regular-season-ending five game homestand.
  • Senior Alissa Sullivan (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) appeared in her 102nd career game, tying Gabrielle Bourgeois '08 and Emily Loebs '16 for sixth in program history, and coming within one of the record.

THE ACTION

  • The Purple Knights had the first good chance of the game, as first-year Sophia Burns (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals 19U) spun and shot from the slot but slipped the puck just wide of the left post at 1:40.
  • Senior Arianna Boscia's (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy) slap shot from the right circle was denied by McCabe's blocker at 6:14, and Simons made a blocker stop of her own at 9:15, turning away junior Keira Thacker's bid from the low left circle.
  • The first 10:23 of a free-flowing first period took only 12 minutes to play, as both goalies made three saves but never covered the puck, and only two whistles were blown.
  • Simons registered five big stops in the latter half of the stanza, including denying Merrill's point-blank try from below the right circle with her mask at 12:11.
  • During a SUNY Potsdam power play, Simons made consecutive stops around 16:25, first rejecting senior Lucy Condon with her mask before stopping Wasielewski's follow-up shot with the shaft of her stick.
  • First-year Alex Quinn's redirection out front was turned away at 17:42 by the left pad of Simons, who then made a glove save on first-year Makenzie Martin's shot from the slot with 18:35 gone.
  • Léonard broke the deadlock at 6:53 of the second period from the slot, converting Condon's give-and-go pass from the right circle during a power play.
  • Merrill rung the crossbar from the slot at 12:12 before a sprawling McCabe covered a loose puck out front at 13:51 with three Purple Knights in the vicinity during an odd-woman situation.
  • Simons withstood a flurry during the beginning of the third period to keep it 1-0, including stopping Wasielewski's redirection out front at 2:40 before senior Miranda Kolb sent a follow-up attempt wide of the left post 20 seconds later.
  • First-year Ella Saracco (Melrose, Mass./Middlesex Islanders) had a shot saved during a 2-on-1 break at 8:49, and senior Jordan Monbouquette (Wayland, Mass./Lawrence Academy) sent a follow-up try wide of the far post later in the possession.
  • Merrill doubled the lead at 13:25, spinning low in the right circle while being closely guarded and sending a quick shot off of Simons' trapper and just over the goal line.
