Taylor Wiercinski (Groton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) was named Northeast 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week and first-year attackman
Chris Davis (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) landed his second NE10 Rookie of the Week accolade in three weeks for the week ending on Sunday, March 22.
Wiercinski scored twice, scooped 16 ground balls and caused three turnovers during a 2-0 week, aiding a defense that allowed 6.5 goals per game and a faceoff unit that won 71.7% of its faceoffs (33-for-46). In a 14-3 win at Dominican (N.Y.) University on Tuesday, he scored twice and added six ground balls and a caused turnover before collecting 10 ground balls and two caused turnovers in an 11-10 upset of No. 17 Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday. Wiercinski is tied for eighth in the NE10 in ground balls per game (4.4), but third among non-faceoff specialists. He has 31 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and five goals.
Davis had a hat trick in each end of a 2-0 week, finishing with six goals, two assists and three ground balls. After notching three goals and two helpers in a 14-3 win at Dominican (N.Y.), he had three more goals in the 11-10 upset of No. 17 Southern New Hampshire on Saturday. Davis scored twice during an 8-1 run that helped his team overcome a 7-3 halftime deficit. He leads the Purple Knights in goals (20) and points (25) while adding 18 ground balls. Davis is tied for sixth in the NE10 in goals and tied for 10th in points.
Now ranked 19th in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, the Purple Knights are 6-1 overall and 1-1 in NE10 play. They host sixth-ranked Pace University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
