COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College men's soccer
team (6-4-2, 3-3-2 NE-10) took a 2-1 win over UMass Lowell (1-10-1,
0-8-1 NE-10) at Duffy Field on Tuesday, ending the squad's
three-game losing skid and five-game winless streak.
The Purple Knights battled through a scoreless first half before
senior Rob
Pierce (Charlotte, Vt./Essex (Worcester Academy))
found the net 10 minutes into the second frame. Pierce gathered a
pass from classmate Ryan Gannon (Colchester, Conn./Bacon
Academy (Central Conn. State)) as River Hawks goalie
Connor Askins (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial)
dove for the ball, leaving the left side of the net wide open for
the easy score. Gannon chipped in another goal seven minutes later,
firing in a shot from the penalty kick line after sophomore
Dana
DiPinto (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial (Tilton
School)) trapped a throw in.
For UMass Lowell, senior Stephen Potcner (Wilmington,
Mass./Wilmington) blasted a shot into the net off a
well-placed flick by freshman Neil Lavanchy (Scituate,
Mass./Cushing Academy) in the 83rd minute, but
it was too little, too late. Saint Michael's held on to pick up the
team's third conference victory and keep their playoff hopes
alive.
Junior goalie Logan Kingman (New Bern,
N.C./New Bern) made three saves for the Purple Knights,
and Askins stopped four shots for the River Hawks.
The Purple Knights return to action with the first game of the
three-game road trip at American International on Saturday at 2
p.m.
