Penmen pass Purple Knights in NE-10 standings

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team (5-7-2, 4-6-2 NE-10) lost a tight 1-0 game to Southern New Hampshire (6-6-1, 5-5-1 NE-10) at Duffy Field on Wednesday. The win moves the Penmen ahead of the Purple Knights in the Northeast-10 standings and knocks Saint Michael's out of the eighth and final playoff spot with three games remaining. The Purple Knights play two of their remaining three games against Adelphi and New Haven, both of which are within two points of the last postseason slot.  

For Southern New Hampshire, sophomore Kaleigh Roberge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) sprinted into the goalie box unmarked and footed in the first and only goal of the game two minutes into the second half. Junior Ariel Teixeira (Warren, R.I./Mount Hope) and senior Danielle Courtemanche (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) provided assists on the play.

Sophomore Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) had two scoring chances immediately following the Penmen goal, but a matter of inches made the difference between a possible 2-1 lead and the eventual 1-0 defeat for Saint Michael's. First, Crockett dribbled down the left sideline before squaring up a line drive that clanked off the crossbar and out of bounds. Minutes later, Crockett beat the defense down the left side again. The tough angle forced her to hook the ball with her left foot, sending the ball just wide right of the net.

Junior goalie Brittany Cocozza (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich (Saint John's)) made nine saves against the Penmen offense, which rattled off 16 shots. Sophomore keeper Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West) stopped three saves and picked up her fifth shutout of the season.

The Purple Knights play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they play host to Adelphi at 1 p.m.
