COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College women's
soccer team (4-4-2, 3-3-2 NE-10) took a 1-0 nail biter over Le
Moyne (4-3-2, 2-3-2 NE-10) at Duffy Field on Saturday, thanks to a
defensive save by junior Mary Catanzarita
(Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) with 30
seconds left to preserve the victory.
For the Purple Knights, junior Teal Bryan (North
Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) blasted a shot into the net off a
rebound from sophomore Megan Olsen
(Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) to break the tie less
than three minutes into the second half. Bryan's second goal of the
season was one of many chances for both teams, but none proved more
breathtaking than the Dolphins' best scoring opportunity of the
day.
As Saint Michael's clung to a 1-0 lead with the clock ticking
down, Le Moyne sophomore Gabriele Ariola (Mexico,
N.Y./Mexico) caught Saint Michael's junior goalie
Brittany Cocozza
(Cranston, R.I./East Greenwich (Saint John's)) committed
to a previous rebound and fired a wide open shot to the left side
of the net. Catanzarita anticipated Ariola's move and lunged into
the goal just in time to deflect the shot and save the win.
Cocozza stopped seven shots against the aggressive Le Moyne
attack, and Dolphin senior keeper Felicia Tynan (Oxford,
N.Y./Oxford Academy) made nine saves.
The Purple Knights return to action on Tuesday when they head to
UMass Lowell for a 7 p.m. conference match.
