WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer
team (5-10-2, 4-9-2 Northeast-10 Conference) ended its season on
Sunday with a 3-2 loss at the University of New Haven on Sunday
afternoon.
Juniors Laura Ostrout (Northfield,
Vt./Northfield) and Kristin Hagenbarth
(Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union/Univ. of Vermont)) each
scored a goal in the setback, Saint Michael's fifth straight
one-goal loss to end the season. Fellow junior Brittany
Cocozza (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich (Saint
John's)) stopped nine shots in the loss.
For New Haven (8-7-2, 6-6-2 NE-10), Holly
Dawson's sixth goal of the season with 12:41 left in
regulation proved to be the game-winner. Lucy
Francisco and Emily Buckley-Matura also
scored, and Kim Taylor stopped four shots.
New Haven led 1-0 at halftime, but Ostrout and Hagenbarth scored
in the first 8:25 of the second half to give Saint Michael's a 2-1
edge. The Purple Knights maintained their lead for nearly 14
minutes, but with less than 23 minutes left in the second half,
Buckley-Matura's goal evened the score at 2-all, and 10 minutes
later, Dawson's scored sealed the win for the Chargers.
New Haven held a 17-7 edge in shots, and a 9-0 advantage in
corner kicks.
The contest ended the careers of four Saint Michael's
seniors: Mary Diebold (Northfield,
Vt./Northfield), Liz Freiberger (South Walpole,
Mass./Walpole), Katie Murphy (Woodbridge,
Conn./Amity Regional), and Jenn Senecal (Yarmouth,
Maine/Yarmouth).
