Spartans snap tie with two goals in final 21 minutes, hand SMC first lost of season

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team (3-1-0) suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to Saint Thomas Aquinas College, 3-1, in the opening game of the DoubleTree Men's Soccer Classic on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.

For STAC (4-0-0), sophomore Brendan Flynn (Monroe, N.Y.) scored two goals in the final 21 minutes of regulation to snap a 1-all tie. Classmate Daniel Davren (Pearl River, N.Y.) also scored for the Spartans, while junior Andrew Tartara (Bardonia, N.Y.) stopped five shots for the victory.

For Saint Michael's, senior Blake Schill (Essex, Vt./Essex (Worcester Academy)) netted his second goal of the season off of an assist from junior Rob Irving (Oradell, N.J./Don Bosco Prep). Sophomore Logan Kingman (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) recorded a career-high 12 saves in defeat.

Schill opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, as he one-touched a midfield serve from Irving to stake the hosts to an early advantage. Six minutes later, however, STAC countered on Davren's fourth tally of the year, assisted by sophomore Joseph Connolly (Nanuet, N.Y.).

The score remained tied at 1-all until 20:14 left in the second half, as Flynn converted off of a pass from senior Kurt Schuler (Tuxedo, N.Y.). Seven minutes later, Flynn doubled the Spartans' advantage, connecting off of a feed from junior Remington Lee (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.).

Saint Michael's returns to action on Sunday, as the Purple Knights complete play at the DoubleTree Classic with a 12 p.m. match versus Bloomfield College.
