Rowe's header lifts Purple Knights in game two of DoubleTree Classic

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team took a 3-2 win over Bloomfield College on Sunday thanks to some last-minute heroics by sophomore Ian Rowe (Waterville, Maine/Waterville Senior). Rowe hammered home a header off a pass by senior Andrew Scanlon (East Sandwich, Mass./Worcester Academy) just over a minute into overtime to give the Purple Knights (4-1-0) the win in the second game of the DoubleTree Classic at Duffy Field.

Bloomfield (4-1-0) carried a 1-0 lead into the second half on senior Dwayne Reid's (Bronx, N.Y./Tivoli Gardens, J.A.) fourth goal of the tournament, but Rowe answered quickly with an early score in the second half. Senior Rob Pierce (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union (Worcester Academy)) gave Saint Michael's the late advantage by sinking a direct kick with less than five minutes to play, but Bloomfield senior Terry Gibbs (London, England/Harlington Community) thwarted a fatigued Saint Michael's defense and scored the game-tying goal with 12 seconds remaining.

Not to be outdone, Rowe again wasted no time with a retaliation and headed a lofted pass from Scanlon into the bottom right corner of the net to give Saint Michael's the victory. Sophomore goalie Logan Kingman (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) made six saves for the Purple Knights, including a crucial save on a penalty kick 25 minutes into the first half.

Senior keeper Steven Alonso (Kearny, N.J./Rutgers-Newark) stopped five shots for the Deacons, who outshot Saint Michael's 15-14 in the contest.

Saint Michael's resumes conference play next Saturday when the Purple Knights host Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
