WALTHAM, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team
(5-2-2, 2-1-2 Northeast-10 Conference) lost its first league game
of the season on Tuesday, falling at Bentley University, 8-0.
For Bentley (5-1-2, 2-0-2 NE-10), Matt Solomon
tallied two goals and an assist off the bench, while Eric
Ulmer also scored a pair of goals. Ryan
Hatch added a goal and an assist, while Mike
Nikiforov and Matt Reynolds each recorded
two saves in net to combine for the shutout.
For Saint Michael's, ranked seventh in the
NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Division II East Region Poll released
earlier today, sophomore Chad Chapman (East Burke,
Vt./Lyndon Institute) stopped three second-half shots
in his second collegiate contest. Classmate Logan
Kingman (New Bern, N.C.) also recorded three saves in 52
minutes of play, before Chapman relieved him.
The Purple Knights, who entered the contest on a four-game
unbeaten streak, had allowed just six goals in their first eight
games of the season. Today's loss, meanwhile, is the worst for
the program since an 8-0 setback to Southern Connecticut State
University on Sept. 6, 1997.
The host Falcons took control early, as Hatch netted an
unassisted goal just 1:35 into the game. Bentley doubled its lead
on Ulmer's first goal of the season in the 16th minute, and took a
3-0 just before halftime.
Bentley picked up where it left off in the second half, as the
Falcons scored four goals in the opening 22 minutes of the second
period. The hosts completed the scoring with 2:41 left in
regulation.
Bentley outshot Saint Michael's 19-5, and held a 7-3 edge in
corner kicks.
Saint Michael's will look to bounce back on Saturday, as the
Purple Knights visit league-rival Le Moyne College for a 1 p.m.
contest.
