BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - Sophomore Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton,
N.H./Gilford) scored twice, including the eventual
game-winner, as the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team
opened the 2010 season with a 3-0 shutout of Molloy College in the
first game of the Dowling College Tournament on Saturday.
Also for the Purple Knights (1-0-0), senior Katie Murphy
(Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) found the back of the
net, while sophomore Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem
Central) assisted on Crockett's game-winner. Junior
Brittany Cocozza (Cranston, R.I./East Greenwich (St.
John's)) earned the shutout in net, but didn't have to
stop any shots.
For Molloy (0-1-0), freshman Tricia Zarro (Valley
Stream, N.Y.) stopped two shots in her collegiate
debut.
Crockett opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, as she took a
free kick from Olsen and tapped the ball past Zarro. Murphy doubled
the Purple Knights' lead 12 minutes into the second half, as she
capitalized on a rebounded shot attempt for an unassisted score.
Crockett sealed the win for Saint Michael's with 2:08 left in the
contest, as she gathered a loose ball near midfield and went the
distance for an unassisted tally.
The Purple Knights outshot Molloy 9-1 in the contest, including
8-1 in the second half. Saint Michael's also earned seven of the
game's 11 corner kicks.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Sunday, as the Purple
Knights take on host Dowling at 11 a.m.
