Purple Knights post second straight shutout in conference opener

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team ran away with a 3-0 win over Saint Rose to begin Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday at Duffy Field.

The first half saw no scoring for either team, but senior Rob Pierce (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union (Westminster School)) struck first again for the Purple Knights (2-0, 1-0), finishing a midfield serve from freshman Anthony Stanley (La Ceiba, Honduras/Santa Teresa Bilingual School (Saint Johnsbury Acad.)) at 13:55 in the second half. Sophomore Dana DiPinto (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial (Tilton School)) extended the lead with his first collegiate goal, tapping in a lob from senior captain Ryan Gannon (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy (Central Conn. St.)). Sophomore Ian Rowe (Waterville, Maine/Waterville Senior) also received credit for an assist on the play.

Senior Andrew Scanlon (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich (Worcester Academy)) knocked in an insurance goal off a rebound from Pierce's direct kick that drilled the crossbar.

The Purple Knights outshot the Golden Knights (1-1, 0-1) 18-7, continuing their trend of steady defensive play. Junior goalie Patrick Ohlsson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gym) stopped seven shots for Saint Rose, and Saint Michael's sophomore goalie Logan Kingman (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) did not face any shots on net but gained his second consecutive shutout.

Saint Michael's will take the field again on Thursday when they host in-state rival Lyndon State at 4 p.m.
