COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team had its three-game unbeaten and shutout streaks snapped on Tuesday, falling by a 2-0 count to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell on Duffy Field during a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
The Purple Knights, who saw their shutout streak end at 338:13 on the River Hawks' first goal, slipped to 4-6-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the league. The visitors are 6-2-2 and 5-1-2, having extended their own shutout streak to four contests while posting their seventh clean sheet of the season.
Senior Ashleigh Adams (Milton, Vt./Milton) made eight saves for the Purple Knights and now has 21 in her past two contests. Senior Maddy Bissaillon (Merrimac, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and freshman Brittany Russo (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) scored for the River Hawks, while sophomore Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) collected one stop.
Adams kept the game scoreless early, sliding out to corral a long pass with junior Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) bearing down in the sixth minute. In the 20th minute, Costa came close to putting her team on the scoreboard, narrowly missing the upper right corner from 20 yards.
In the 25th minute, Saint Michael's junior Julia Moorehead (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) sent a dangerous cross that was intercepted by Carlson before making its way through the box, and UMass Lowell broke through a couple minutes later. Russo took away a bad clear and beat a diving Adams from 20 yards, slipping a left-footed shot into the lower right at 26:56. Bissaillon made it 2-0 at 39:53 in similar fashion, taking a failed clear and hitting the upper right corner from 35 yards.
Adams kept it a two-goal game with a fingertip save of Russo's blast from 20 yards in the 52nd minute before the Purple Knights nearly broke on the board in the 67th minute. Senior Kristin Hagenbarth (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union/Vermont) crossed from the right end line through a pair of defenders to junior Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford), who lifted a shot over the bar from inside the penalty box.
Adams snagged a handful of crosses in the second stanza to keep it a two-goal margin, including spinning toward the net at the goal line to collect an 81st-minute cross with a River Hawk behind her. Crockett nearly cut into her team's deficit a couple minutes later but sailed a shot off the crossbar in the 83rd minute.
The Purple Knights host Assumption College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. as part of the department's Think Pink event.
