Murphy's 69th-minute game-winner lifts Purple Knights past Assumption, 1-0

Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Katie Murphy (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) netted the game-winning goal in the 69th minute, lifting the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team over Assumption College, 1-0, on Saturday at Duffy Field during a Northeast-10 Conference contest.

The Purple Knights, who posted their fourth shutout in five games, improved to 5-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in league play, while the Greyhounds slipped to 3-7-1 and 1-7-2.

Murphy's goal was her third marker for the season, while senior Kristin Hagenbarth (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union/Vermont) recorded the assist. Senior keeper Brittany Cocozza (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich/Saint John's [N.Y.]) made eight saves, including six in the second half, to post her third straight shutout. She has not been scored upon in the last 304:32.

Freshman keeper Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) made seven saves for the Greyhounds, who had a 5-3 corner kicks edge. Each team fired 15 shots.

One of the Greyhounds' best second-half opportunities came at 57:07 when sophomore Andrea Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) handled the ball at the top of the box and sent a volley that was stopped by Cocozza. Bates again nearly converted in the 60th minute, sending a header toward the net, but knocking it off the left post. At the 68:19 mark, the Purple Knights scored when Hagenbarth sent a pass to Murphy, who handled the ball and chipped it into the net over Edgin, who went down to defend the shot.

In a scoreless first half, Assumption nearly converted at the 11:46 mark when sophomore Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) beat a defender and sent a low, hard shot from the top of the box to the right corner, forcing Cocozza to make a diving save. With 14 seconds left, the Purple Knights almost broke the deadlock when freshman Olivia Biron (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) fired a shot from the left side of the box, causing Edgin to dive toward the left post.

The Purple Knights head to Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start. The Penmen are tied for 10th in the latest regional poll.
