BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team held 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifier Dowling College off the scoreboard until the 78th minute on Friday evening during an eventual 1-0 loss in the Dowling Tournament at Golden Lions Field. In the season opener for both squads, Dowling earned a 1-0 win against the Purple Knights for the third consecutive season while extending its unbeaten streak to seven contests.
Saint Michael's, which started nine underclassmen, including four first-years, received four saves from sophomore Aubrey Ouellet (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) during her first collegiate start. The Purple and Gold held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks while being outshot only 12-6.
Junior Alexandria Abruzzo (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) tallied the contest's lone goal, while sophomore Melissa Guglielmo (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) made two saves in posting the shutout for the Golden Lions.
First-year Josie Couch (Alton Bay, N.H./Brewster Academy) had the most accurate scoring chance during the first half of play for the visitors, being denied by Guglielmo in the 37th minute. Ouellet followed with stops in the 39th and 45th minutes, keeping the contest scoreless heading into the second stanza, and recorded her third save in the 58th minute.
After a Dowling player headed a shot off the crossbar in the 62nd minute, Ouellet again denied a chance during the 72nd minute before a pair of Purple Knights fired go-ahead attempts wide during the 76th and 77th minutes. In the 78th minute, senior Gabrielle D'Aprile (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) sent Abruzzo in alone on Ouellet and tucked her winner into the right side of the net. In the 82nd minute, Purple Knight sophomore Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont) fired her team's lone tying try, but the shot was turned away.
Saint Michael's wraps up action at the Dowling Tournament on Sunday against Molloy College at 11 a.m.
