Purple Knights drop 1-0 decision to Saint Anselm, yield just second goal in three games

Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team fell to Saint Anselm College, 1-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt on Wednesday at Duffy Field. With the loss, Saint Michael's drops to 1-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the league, while Saint Anselm improves to 2-5-1 and 1-4-1.

Sophomore Aubrey Ouellet (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) made one second-half save for Saint Michael's in her first contest since Sept. 2. The Purple Knights held a 6-2 advantage in shots on target in the game, with each team taking 12 shots.

Senior Kaitlin Oldfield (Epping, N.H./Raymond) notched her fourth goal of the season for Saint Anselm, while sophomore Gabriella Primera (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) made six saves to pick up her third shutout of the year.

The Purple Knights registered the only two shots on goal in the opening period despite being outshot 7-4. Junior back Katie Butler (Sayville, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) produced the game's first real scoring threat, letting a shot go from the middle of the box in the 47th minute that was saved by Primera, as the hosts took the first six shots of the second half. Saint Michael's received three scoring chances from senior Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford), sophomore Carley Pestana (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) and first-year Gab Kondracki (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) between the 64th and 66th minutes but weren't able to break the tie.

Oldfield scored with her back to a vacated net at 79:10 to put the Hawks on top after Ouellet rushed out of the goal to knock away a long pass. Ouellet made a diving save on a Saint Anselm breakaway in the 88th minute to keep the game 1-0 before Purple Knight sophomore Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont) fired a shot from distance that sailed high of the upper right corner in the 90th minute as her team's final scoring attempt of the contest.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday when it faces a College of Saint Rose team that holds the top ranking in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll at 12 p.m. in Albany, N.Y. The Golden Knights are the defending NCAA Tournament champions.
