Purple Knights fall to defending national champs, top-ranked Saint Rose

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team dropped a 6-0 decision to top-ranked College of Saint Rose on Saturday at Sullivan Field. With the loss, the Purple Knights fall to 1-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights, who are the defending national champions and currently hold the top ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll, improve to 8-0-1 and 6-0-1.

Sophomore Aubrey Ouellet (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) made six saves in 59:37 for Saint Michael's before first-year Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) made four stops in the final 30:23.

Junior Carmelina Puopolo (Scarborough, Ontario/Cardinal Newman) netted a hat trick for Saint Rose, while classmate Sydney Bond (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), sophomore Brittany Barry (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and first-year Kristin Carr (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) each added a goal. Junior Jessica Gerski (Harbor City, Calif./Bishop Montgomery) made four saves in 63:36 to pick up the win for the Golden Knights, while first-year Kallina Haase (Portland, Ore./Westview) made one save in the final 26:14.

Bond converted a penalty kick at 10:06 to give Saint Rose the final lead after a corner kick led to a hand ball on a defender. A pair of Purple Knight tying attempts were denied by Gerski during the 15th and 19th minutes, and Ouellet made a diving stop in the 22nd minute on a shot from close range by Puopolo to keep the Purple Knights within a goal. Puopolo eventually tallied her first of the game at 26:42 on a shot from inside the box to put the Golden Knights up 2-0 at the half.

Saint Rose pulled away with three goals in an 8:17 stretch of the second half. Puopolo curled in a corner kick from the left side at 50:25, Carr found the back of the net at 57:26 on a 15-yard strike to left side, and Puopolo completed her hat trick just over a minute later at 58:42. Barry scored on a shot from inside the box at 71:07 to complete the scoring. The Purple Knights' final scoring opportunity came when a shot off the foot of first-year Cassie Chernicki (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) was turned aside by Haase in the 74th minute following a corner kick.

The Purple Knights return to action on Tuesday for an NE-10 match-up at Franklin Pierce University at 7 p.m.
