Box Score
COLCHESTER, Vt. - First-year goalkeeper Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) made seven saves in her first collegiate start, including on a second-overtime penalty kick, in helping the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team knot regionally-ranked American International College (AIC), 1-1, on Saturday at Duffy Field. In each team's Northeast-10 Conference opener, the Purple Knights moved to 0-2-1, while AIC is 1-1-1. The Yellow Jackets stood ninth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region poll.
In her team's first contest since last Sunday, senior Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) netted a 40th-minute go-ahead marker, as the hosts were narrowly outshot, 16-15. Sullivan came up with three of her saves during the 20 minutes of overtimes, including two in the second extra stanza. The Purple Knights improved to 9-3-1 during their last 13 games with the Yellow Jackets and extended their home undefeated run in the series to six straight contests.
Senior Devan Boundy (Avon, Conn./Avon) notched the second-half equalizer for AIC, while classmate Amber McLeen (Leeds, England/Saint Aidan's Church of England) had eight stops.
The visitors held a 10-4 advantage in shots during the opening half, but Sullivan came up with four saves to keep them off the board. In the 27th minute, senior Bonnie Boornazian (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) momentarily beat the defense and had only the keeper to beat, but her shot toward the lower left was denied by a sliding Sullivan.
The Purple Knights grabbed the lead late in the stanza, less than two minutes after another Sullivan stop. Sophomore Olivia Biron (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) laid the ball back to Crockett, whose strike from 25 yards away lofted above McLeen and just under the crossbar at 39:45 despite heading into a strong breeze.
Saint Michael's outshot AIC, 11-6, during the second half and overtimes, but the Yellow Jackets were the only team to crack the scoring column in that time. Boundy pounced on a loose ball in the Purple Knight penalty area after a failed clear during the 53rd minute to knot the game, and a trio of Saint Michael's shots in the final four minutes of regulation were stopped by McLeen.
Five of the six shots in the initial overtime session came off the feet of Purple Knights, and Sullivan denied the best chance for either team during the second overtime by diving left to deny AIC's penalty kick at 104:53.
Saint Michael's hits the road on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game at Stonehill College.
