GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - A 77th-minute tally was all the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team yielded to regionally-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday, but the marker stood up and gave the Panthers a 1-0 victory during Northeast-10 Conference action at Motamed Field. The Purple Knights are now 0-7 overall and 0-5, while Adelphi is 4-1-1 and 2-1-1 and stands sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) East Region poll.
Sophomore Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) made two saves, as Saint Michael's was only outshot 10-8 and took three of the game's eight corner kicks. The Purple and Gold has suffered four one-goal setbacks this fall, including three by 1-0 finals.
Panther sophomore back Taylor Groth (Setauket, N.Y./Saint John the Baptist) netted the game's only goal, while junior Sam Whitney (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) recorded three saves. In five all-time meetings, the squads have now played to four one-goal decisions.
The Purple Knights fired off the first two shots of the contest, holding Adelphi without a shot until the 32nd minute. During the second half, the visitors held a 5-4 edge in shots, at one point firing off five in a row during a 22-minute stretch, including junior Amanda Shanahan (Hull, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) sneaking a shot past the goalkeeper in the 75th minute that was cleared out of danger by a field player. Soon thereafter, one of just two attempts by the hosts after the 53rd minute found of the back of the net for the eventual winner. Following a corner kick, Groth headed home her first goal of the season, at 76:54, and Saint Michael's was unable to get off a tying try in the waning minutes.
