DiCesare and Shanahan score, women's soccer tops Southern New Hampshire, 2-1

Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team scored two first-half goals en route to a 2-1 win against Southern New Hampshire University during Northeast-10 Conference play at Duffy Field on Wednesday. The Purple Knights snap a five-game winless streak and move to 4-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the league, while the Penmen drop to 5-7-1 and 3-6. Saint Michael's, which had not beaten Southern New Hampshire since Oct. 6, 2009, claimed a home victory over the Penmen for the first time since Sept. 4, 2004.

Senior Amanda Shanahan (Hull, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and sophomore Allegra DiCesare (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) both earned their first collegiate goals for Saint Michael's, while junior Cassie Chernicki (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) registered two assists and sophomore Michaela Horne (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) chipped in another helper. Senior goalkeeper Aubrey Ouellet (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) played the first half and made one save and junior Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) made a season-high five stops while playing the second half. Ouellet claimed the victory.

Junior Bridget O'Sullivan (South Grafton, Mass./Holy Name/LIU Brooklyn) tallied for Southern New Hampshire with sophomore Alexa Poulin (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) assisting. Sophomore Autumn Scanlon (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) turned away seven shots in net.

Saint Michael's started the game with three shots in the opening 13:40, but it was Shanahan's marker at 15:13 that gave the hosts the go-ahead score. Chernicki sent a cross pass to Horne, who jumped up through two Penmen defenders and headed a pass to Shanahan. Horne's pass then found Shanahan, who headed down the ball past Scanlon to the lower right. Two more shots by Purple and Gold junior Gabrielle Kondracki (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) were stopped by Scanlon before DiCesare found the back of the net at 31:05. Off a through ball to the right side from Chernicki, DiCesare raced up the field and fired a shot past an oncoming challenge by Scanlon.

After being outshot 9-3 during the first half, Southern New Hampshire outshot Saint Michael's, 8-3, in the second stanza. The second half opened with Shanahan's bid for another marker clanged off the left post at 49:55. Southern New Hampshire's offense then came alive, as the visitors reeled off six shots over the next 30:50, with five being saved by Sullivan. The Penmen's next attempt ended the shutout as O'Sullivan brought the visitors to within one at 81:10. Directly off Poulin's corner kick from the right side, O'Sullivan leaped up in a scramble and headed home the ball just under the crossbar. Southern New Hampshire was then within inches of burying the equalizer as sophomore Olivia Parsons (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) sent a header shot off the crossbar with 1:52 remaining.

Saint Michael's hits the road to play 2013 NE-10 Championship semifinalist University of New Haven this Saturday at 1 p.m.
