DEWITT, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team fell to Le Moyne College, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Gold's Gym during a Northeast-10 Conference match. The Purple Knights are 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the league, while the Dolphins improved to 7-7 and 5-3.
Saint Michael's forged ahead 2-1 after doubles, as juniors Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) captured a tight 8-6 decision at No. 2, while sophomores Tyler Lucey (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) won 8-3 in the third spot. The victory was the first as a collegian for Lucey, who is in his initial season with the program.
Steward notched another victory at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2, but that proved to be the Purple Knights' lone victory in that discipline. Sophomore Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) had a close opening set during an eventual 6-4, 6-1 loss in the fourth position, but no other Purple Knight won more than two games in a set.
Saint Michael's returns home to face Franklin Pierce University on Friday at 12 p.m.
