SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team capped a two-match weekend homestand with a 9-0 loss to Stonehill College on Saturday at The EDGE during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights are 1-8 overall and 1-7 in the league, while the Skyhawks improved to 12-4 and 7-1.
Juniors Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) fell by an 8-5 count at No. 2 doubles, coming the closest to taking a point for Saint Michael's. The tandems of senior Billy Wood (Wayne, Pa./Home Schooled)/sophomore Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) and sophomores Tyler Lucey (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow)/Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) both won one game during their matches in the first and third positions, respectively.
In singles action, Merry won his opening set before falling by a 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 10-5 count in the second position. Wood lost a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 1, and Laves fell by a 6-3, 6-2 final in the third spot. Sophomore Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) won a pair of games during a straight-set loss at No. 4.
Saint Michael's completes its three-match homestand by hosting Senior Day on Wednesday against Assumption College at 3 p.m.
