COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team fell by an 8-1 count to Assumption College during Senior Day on Wednesday at the SMC Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights capped their home slate by slipping to 1-9 overall and 1-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds are 7-8 and 4-3.
Juniors Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) earned the Purple and Gold's point on the day with a 9-7 triumph at No. 2 doubles. The tandems of senior Billy Wood (Wayne, Pa./Home Schooled)/sophomore Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) and sophomore Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School)/first-year Sam Costes (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) both suffered 8-2 losses, in the first and third positions, respectively.
During singles play, Laves captured a team-high four games, falling by a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 3. Merry suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback in the second spot, while Lambert, Steward, Wood and sophomore Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) all won a pair of games. As the lone senior on the squad, Wood was competing in his final career home match.
The Purple Knights complete their 2015 slate on Saturday at American International College at 1 p.m.
