SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team concluded its season with a 7-2 win against American International College on Saturday at Cathedral High School. The Purple Knights finished 2-9 overall and 2-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets ended the year 0-11 and 0-10.
Saint Michael's began the match up 2-0, with AIC defaulting at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Juniors Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) teamed for an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles, while senior Billy Wood (Wayne, Pa./Home Schooled) and sophomore Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) came up short in their match at No. 1, 8-5. The Purple Knights led 3-1 with five singles matches remaining.
Merry did not lose a game in a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win in the fifth spot. Laves claimed a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3, and sophomore Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win in the fourth position. Wood closed out his college career with a close 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 loss in the top position.
