WALTHAM, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team fell to regionally-ranked Bentley University, 9-0, on Tuesday during Northeast-10 Conference action at the Waltham Athletic Club. The Purple Knights are now 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the league, while the Falcons improved to 8-6 and 4-2. Bentley is ranked 10th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional poll.
Each of the Purple and Gold's three doubles teams fell by 8-2 counts. Senior Billy Wood (Wayne, Pa./Home Schooled) and sophomore Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) competed at No. 1, juniors Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) appeared in the second position, while sophomores Tyler Lucey (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) sided at No. 3.
During singles play, sophomore Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) won a team-high four games while falling by a 6-1, 6-3 count at No. 4. Merry captured three games in the second spot, Steward nabbed a pair of games at No. 5, and the three remaining Purple Knights won one game apiece.
Saint Michael's begins a three-match homestand on Friday by hosting regionally-ranked Adelphi University, a 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifier, at 3 p.m.
