Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team lost to Assumption College, 3-1, on Wednesday during Northeast-10 Conference play at the Assumption Multi-Sport Stadium. The Purple Knights are 3-9 overall and 2-7 in the league, while the Greyhounds improved to 7-6-1 and 5-4-1.
Playing a half hour from her hometown, senior Michaela Horne (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) scored for the second straight game for Saint Michael's, while sophomore Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) made a career-high 12 saves, including eight in the second half.
Junior Amanda Arnold posted a goal and an assist for Assumption, while senior Nikki Callini and first-year Alexis Stowell both added a marker. Classmate Alexis Nason made four saves.
LeCours recorded a pair of stops in the third minute before Horne had a pair of eighth-minute bids, getting blocked at 7:11 and being denied by Nason 24 seconds later. In the 14th minute, Assumption broke through, as LeCours slid out to turn away Callini's attempt, but Arnold slipped home the rebound at 13:25. A Greyhound rung the post in the 22nd minute while attempting to double the lead, but Callini successfully made it 2-0 by finding the lower right corner of the net at 32:01 off of sophomore Jessica FitzGerald's cross. Horne deposited the Purple Knights' next shot into the net at 37:12 off of a free kick, trimming the deficit to 2-1, and first-year Greta Ricigliano (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) slipped a tying bid high in the 42nd minute. Assumption carried the one-goal edge into halftime.
LeCours made six saves in the opening 11:27 of the second half, and Horne skipped a 30-yard shot along the turf in the 59th minute that Nason denied to keep it 2-1. A little more than a minute later, Stowell picked the upper left corner from 25 yards away at 60:01 to extend the advantage to two goals. The Purple Knights had back-to-back scoring chances denied later in the stanza, first as sophomore Alex Matteo's (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) shot from 30 yards away at 77:54 was scooped up by Nason. The keeper then stopped sophomore Sara Rooke's (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) redirection from the top of the box of Matteo's long entry pass at 78:34.
Saint Michael's visits Le Moyne College on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest.
