Women's soccer falls on last-minute goal to regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire

Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team fell to regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 3-2, on a last-minute goal at home on Tuesday. The loss drops the Purple Knights' record to 3-11 overall and 2-9 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The win pushes Southern New Hampshire to 8-6-1 and 5-5-1. The Penmen were ranked 10th in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region poll.

Sophomore Emily Durette (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) scored for the second time in as many games and first-year Greta Ricigliano (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) tallied her first marker as a collegian. Senior Alana Houlihan (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) contributed with an assist. Sophomore Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) made six saves in the contest.

For the Penmen, junior Abigail Maker scored twice and sophomore Danielle Humphreys tallied once. Junior Trisha Luis recorded two assists while classmate Rianna Fasanello registered another. Junior Paige Salmon made five stops on the day.

Scoring opened in the 35th minute when Fasanello took a shot that hit the right post and the rebound was gathered and finished by Humphreys just inside the left post. In the 40th minute, sophomore Miranda Peloquin got a good look at goal for the Penmen, but her hard waist-high shot was gathered and held by LeCours, keeping the score at 1-0. At 40:30, Durette found the ball on her foot 25 yards from goal and fired a shot that hit the top right hand corner. The teams entered halftime knotted at 1-1.

In the 48th minute, Luis sent a pass from the right post to the center of the box for Maker, who finished just inside the left post to give Southern New Hampshire a 2-1 lead. In the 61st minute, first-year Lauren Dunn (Truckee, Calif./Sugar Bowl Academy) let go of a shot from 25 yards that tested but couldn't beat Salmon. Early in the 72nd minute, Ricigliano carried the ball down the left side and got fouled by a Penmen defender. The free kick that followed was taken by Houlihan, who sent a high ball across the face of goal that a leaping Ricigliano met with her head on the right post for the finish. The goal leveled the score at 71:38.

Saint Michael's tested Southern New Hampshire twice more with shots from first-year Madeleine Morse (Brownsville, Vt./Windsor) at 74:40 and by Ricigliano at 75:27, but Salmon stopped each attempt. With four minutes remaining, LeCours was forced off her line as Maker and junior Andie Devaney (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) battled for a 50-50 ball, as LeCours sprinted to the top of the box and slid to stop and possess the ball as the two players fell over her.

In the final minute the Penmen forced a corner kick. Junior Courtney Benson sent in a ball that was forced on goal by the strong breeze, however LeCours was able to leap and catch the ball before it could slide under the crossbar. The Purple Knights committed a turnover on the clearing attempt that followed, which led to Luis sending a lead pass that Maker gathered and finished to the right side of goal making the score 3-2 with just 21.6 seconds remaining. The Purple and Gold were unable to get a shot on goal before the clock struck zero.

Up next for Saint Michael's is a conference game at home against Bentley University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Falcons are ninth in this week's NSCAA East Region poll.
