Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team lost to nationally-ranked Adelphi University, 5-1, on Saturday at Duffy Field during a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Purple Knights are 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the league. Adelphi is 5-0 and 3-0, and ranked seventh in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll.
Senior Alyssa Keeler (Ghent, N.Y./Chatham) scored the only goal for Saint Michael's. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) made three stops in the first half before first-year Lindsay St. Pierre (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) subbed in at halftime. St. Pierre made eight saves in her college debut.
Senior Morgan Santoro tallied twice for the Panthers. Juniors Jeanine Nunez and Taylor Sipos both added a goal and an assist, and senior Victoria Antonino also scored. Sophomore goalkeeper Anne Marie Ulliac made three saves for the Panthers.
Santoro broke the ice with a goal in the eighth minute when she received a Sipos through ball in the center of the box and rolled the ball into the bottom right. At 14:46, Keeler tied the game. A ball was misplayed by Panther defender about 30 yards away from the goal, and the loose ball that ensued was corralled by Keeler before she let off a long and high arching shot that flew over the outstretched hands of Ulliac, who had crept too far out of her net.
In the 25th minute, Saint Michael's had an opportunity to take the lead. Senior Michaela Horne (Southboro, Mass. Algonquin Regional) sent a cross in off a corner kick that first-year Greta Ricigliano (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) was able to get her head on. The redirection toward goal was stifled by Ulliac.
Adelphi took the lead for good at 37:30. A misplayed ball squeaked out to Sipos on the left side of the box and she finished into the right side of the goal. At 39:21, senior Amanda Shanahan (Hull, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) had an opportunity to tie the score, but her attempt at goal was stopped by Ulliac.
In the 43rd minute, Santoro notched her second tally, on a through ball from Nunez to the center of the box, as this time she finished in the lower left side of the goal. In the 66th minute Antonino scored on a long and hard shot that clanked off the crossbar and into the net. At 75:37 Nunez scored on another misplayed ball in the Saint Michael's box, pushing the score to 5-1.
The Purple Knights hit the road to play regionally-ranked University of New Haven on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Chargers are eighth in this week's regional poll.
