Box Score WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team fell at the University of New Haven, 2-1, on Tuesday at Kayo Field during Northeast-10 Conference action for the eighth consecutive one-goal contest between the teams. The Purple Knights slipped to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the league, while the Chargers are 4-2-1 and 1-2-1. New Haven was ranked regionally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as recently as last week.
Senior Allegra DiCesare (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) scored for Saint Michael's, while first-year Lindsay St. Pierre (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) made four stops in her first collegiate start. Sophomore Emily Morello and first-year Megan Georges found the back of the net for the Chargers, with Morello potting the winner in the 72nd minute. Junior Deandra Nash and sophomore Kyra Wolonsavich both recorded two saves, with Wolonsavich nabbing the win after 26:52 of shutout relief.
New Haven took the first seven shots and three corner kicks of the game by the 25th minute, including as sophomore Annie White sent a bid off a corner kick wide in the 15th minute. The Purple Knights nearly took the lead on their first shot during the 29th minute, but a Purple and Gold player hit the post. After St. Pierre came up with stops in the 31st and 37th minutes, the Chargers began a sequence in the 38th minute that concluded with their initial tally. A blocked shot led to a corner kick, with White's high shot being followed by another corner from junior Allison Morgan. Her entry pass in the 39th minute was tipped to Georges, who turned and deposited a shot into the lower right corner at 38:38. St. Pierre made two stops in the 45th minute to keep it 1-0 at halftime.
Early in the second stanza, Saint Michael's found the equalizer. Junior back Andie Devaney (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) drove a low through ball that senior Alana Houlihan (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) redirected into space beyond New Haven's back line, and DiCesare just beat a charging Nash to the ball and tapped a soft shot into the lower left corner at 51:17. The visitors pushed for the go-ahead marker by sending five shots toward net between the 62nd and 64th minutes, but the contest remained tied. Nash stopped a pair of attempts in that stretch, with the second leading to a corner kick. First-year Madeleine Morse (Brownsville, Vt./Windsor) capped that stretch by heading Houlihan's corner kick feed wide.
New Haven went ahead in the 72nd minute when Morello took a giveaway and hit the lower left part of the net. Senior Michaela Horne (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) immediately followed with a tying attempt that was denied 19 seconds later by Wolonsavich, and DiCesare sent a header high in the 79th minute. A pair of Charger shots did not reach the net in the 87th minute, and Horne sent a final long try one minute later into Wolonsavich's arms near the right post.
The Purple Knights head to regionally-ranked Pace University on Saturday for a 5 p.m. contest. The Setters are 10th in this week's NSCAA East Region poll.
