Saint Michael’s and New Hampshire College were on a collision course to meet for the national championship from the season’s outset, and a key 4-1 win by the Ice Knights (16-10-2, 12-4-1 ECAC NE) over the Penmen secured Saint Michael’s home-ice advantage for the two-team, two-game NCAA Division II Tournament. After Nick Dion’s 35-save performance ensured a 4-4 tie in the opener, the Ice Knights led 3-0 early in the second period of game two before Jason Harrington and James Burr struck for back-to-back third-period power-play goals to ice an 8-5 victory and the national championship. Dion, Harrington, Darren Beers and Josh Ralph were named All-America at season’s end. The victors’ spoils included a visit with Governor Howard Dean at the Vermont State House and being celebrated on-field before a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park, where senior captain Chris Davidson delivered a ceremonial first pitch.
