After his playing days were over, he returned to the College as assistant athletic director, and took over as head basketball coach in 1972. He led the Knights to the New England Division II Tournament in each of his first two seasons. He served as SMC's head coach for seven seasons, and collected 91 victories--placing him third all-time at the College. Baumann also coached the SMC golf team, and at the time of his induction still serves as a color commentator for radio broadcasts of SMC basketball games.
