Peter was a very skilled, tough, and productive leader for the Purple Knights during a great era in Saint Michael’s Basketball history. He came as a highly-touted recruit, having just led his Assumption Prep (Worcester, MA) high school team to the 1966 New England Prep School Championship. After a standout year with the College’s freshman team, he was a three-year starter for the Knights (freshmen were not eligible for varsity competition in those days), and was a model of consistency for his team, maintaining a “double-double” average (12.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game) over his 71-game career. He averaged 12.5 points and 9.1 rebounds as a sophomore, 11 points and 12.1 rebounds as a junior, and 14.4 points and 11.3 rebounds as a senior. He was an outstanding rebounder, and still ranks among the all-time leaders in single season and career rebounding at Saint Michael’s. He served his team as captain in his senior year, and was a two-time All-State selection. In his senior year, Peter was the recipient of the Michaelman Athlete of the Year Award, and was also selected to receive the Mr. Michaelman Award (voted on by the student body). In 2006, he was enshrined in the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
