Whitney was a true trailblazer, literally and figuratively, in the sport of cross country at SaintMichael’s – a leader for his teammates on and off the course. A four-year member of the team, he could always be counted on to be a top finisher in races. When he graduated in 1984, he was the Saint Michael’s record holder for the 5-mile, 5.2-mile and 10-kilometer race distances, and almost 30 years after his graduation, he still holds the Saint Michael’s record for the 9-kilometer race distance (28:58). He also still holds the College’s record for most race victories in a season (five), and is tied for most career victories (eight). Whitney set his single season victory record in the fall of 1983, when he captained the Men’s Cross Country team through a perfect 11-0 season – the only undefeated season in the sport of cross country in the history of Saint Michael’s. He finished in the Top Ten in the Vermont State Cross Country Championship as a sophomore, and in the Top Five in his junior and senior years, earning All-State, First Team honors in the fall of 1982 and 1983. He was also a Top 50 finisher in the 1982 and 1983 NCAA Regional Cross Country Championships. In recognition of his outstanding loyalty and leadership, he was presented the College’s Victor V. LeMieux ’35 Award in 1984.
