Darren was a four-year standout defenseman who helped the Purple Knights claim the 1999 NCAA Division II national title. Darren tallied 47 points in 99 career games, missing only five possible contests. Saint Michael’s was 65-35-4 overall and 42-14-3 in league play during his career. Darren helped the team post a then-school-record 3.77 GAA in 1995-96 before the Purple and Gold was 17-7-1 overall (11-2-1 ECAC Central) the next year. Saint Michael’s set a still-standing school record for wins in 1997-98 during a 20-7 (12-2 ECAC Central) season that culminated with a regular-season league title, the Purple Knights’ first. Darren had a career-high 17 points and helped Saint Michael’s record a 3.58 GAA, its lowest in the first 32 years of the program’s modern era. He served as assistant captain as a senior, when the Purple Knights topped Southern New Hampshire University by winning the two-game NCAA Division II Tournament series with a victory and a tie. After game one was a 4-4 draw, the teams staged a winner-take-all contest for the national crown in game two, an 8-5 Saint Michael’s triumph. Darren earned NCAA Division II All-America first team, NEHWA All-New England, and ECAC Northeast All-Conference first team accolades. Darren was the College’s first member of the NE10 SAAC and was selected as the league’s national SAAC delegate in 1998-99.
