Saint Michael's Athletic Hall of Fame
An unsung hero during a successful era of basketball, Alex has gone on to an award-winning career in the world of international music and entertainment. He averaged 4.2 points and 5.2 rebounds while starting 82 of 106 career games, helping Saint Michael’s qualify for an NCAA Tournament while winning an NE10 regular-season crown and an ECAC Tournament. Alex served as a captain his senior year, when he was an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar and received the men’s basketball program’s Jerry Lanteri ’76 Award. After graduating magna cum laude, Alex’s professional ascent was rapid. He joined MTV Networks in 1998 before managing the MTV International Strategy and Business Development team for MTV International in London. In 2005, Alex, who grew up in Nigeria, became VP and GM of MTV base, MTV’s first African channel. He is credited with composing the business plan for MTV base and building Viacom’s entertainment business on the continent. Alex was senior VP and managing director of MTV Networks Africa for more than a decade and later became executive VP and managing director of VIMN Africa and executive VP of BET International. In 2020, Alex was hired as YouTube’s managing director of emerging markets in EMEA. He was named one of Africa’s “50 Trailblazers Under 50” by New African Magazine in 2013.
