Ev Smith has dedicated his life to giving to young people through athletics and education. A highly-decorated high school athlete, he was a member of the Purple Knights' legendary football program until the sport was discontinued in 1954, and also represented the College as a champion Golden Gloves boxer. After graduation in 1956, he began his 31-year career as a teacher, and credits his mentor, George 'Doc' Jacobs, with helping him to achieve his dream of coaching. Doc connected Ev with the football and basketball programs at nearby Cathedral (now Rice) High School when he was still a student at the College. Over five decades, he coached football, basketball, boxing, track, and ice hockey at five different high schools, Michigan State University, Saint Michael's, and in the U.S. Marine Corps. He won many titles, including four Vermont high school state championships. In addition, he was an accomplished baseball umpire for 36 years, calling games at the high school and college level. He was Vermont's Baseball Rules Interpreter for 21 years, Umpire Supervisor for 20 years, and helped to teach countless young umpires as an instructor during that time.
