Possibly the purest athlete Saint Michael's has ever had. Played four varsity sports at the College, and competed in the Golden Gloves championships in 1955 during basketball season! Coffey won the boxing state title in the 160-pound class, knocking out his opponent 23 seconds into the first round. A tremendously versatile performer, it was on the baseball diamond that he truly excelled. In 1957, the Burlington Daily News named him "the best infielder in New England." A three-time All-State selection, Coffey led the team in hitting for three years. He finished with a career batting average of .409 and 17 career home runs. A third baseman and shortstop during his playing days, he still holds four individual College baseball records.
