Jim Farley was a talented guard in the beginning of the Purple Knight basketball dynasty. As a freshman in 1948-49, he captained the frosh Purple Squires through an undefeated season, and was the team's leading scorer. As a sophomore in 1949-50, he earned a starting position in the SMC backcourt with Hall of Famer Ed Markey '51, and finished the season as the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 11.7 points per game. In that year, Jim broke seven SMC records on his way to scoring 34 points against Saint Anselm -- a mark that stood until Hall of Famer Tony Nicodemo '59 arrived on campus in the late1950's. Jim was named All-State first team, and SMC finished the year 18-6, winning the state championship and advancing to the National Catholic Tournament. In 1950-51, the Knights were an all-time best 19-4, State Champions, and N.C.T. participants, and Jim was again named All-State after averaging 10.7 points per game. He averaged 10.5 points per contest as a senior, and finished his all-star career with 606 points.
