“Bucky” Egan was a man who ceaselessly embodied the core values of the model student-athlete: leadership, selflessness, sportsmanship, and commitment to excellence – in the classroom, on the field, and in life. He was a three-year starter at shortstop for the varsity baseball team (freshmen were not eligible for varsity teams at that time) - a quick middle infielder and tough out at the plate who captained his team as a senior. “Bucky” was a Dean’s List student who was very involved in student life during his time at Saint Michael’s, and who also excelled in Club Football and Interclass Sports activities. He joined the United States Marines after graduating in 1964, was commissioned as a First Lieutenant, and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. He was activated for combat duty in Vietnam in September of 1966, assigned to the Third Marine Division, Company B, Third Anti-Tank Group, where he commanded an Ontos unit (the Ontos was a six-cannoned light tank, designed to attack the enemy’s main battle tanks to protect infantry). He was killed in action on February 12, 1967, in the Thua Thien Province of South Vietnam, providing protection for an infantry unit that included his classmate, Marty King ’64. He is remembered as a great officer who was highly respected by his men.
