Mary was not only one of the first field hockey stars at Saint Michael’s, but was a driving force behind the foundation of the women’s lacrosse program. Mary totaled eight goals and one assist as a field hockey rookie in 1977, combining with Charter Hall of Famer Kathy O’Neil ’81 to create a formidable 1-2 scoring punch. The duo combined to score 15 of the team’s 21 goals, and the Purple Knights finished 6-3-1. She finished her 38-game career second in program history in each goals (16) and points (37). A field hockey standout from the beginning of her time on campus, Mary’s influence might have been even greater when it came to lacrosse. During her first fall at Saint Michael’s in 1977, she was not only in the middle of her debut field hockey season but was already amid working with Mary Cullen ’79 to organize the school’s first club women’s lacrosse team. Mary was one of two captains when the team hit the field for the first time in spring 1978, and she potted the second goal in program history. By the spring of 1980, Mary was a player-head coach before returning to being a captain as a senior upon business professor Todd Wadsworth being named head coach. Mary had graduated by then, but the program went varsity in 1983, becoming one of the College’s most successful programs over the next two decades.
