Pequignot was a standout two-sport athlete at Saint Michael's, despite what the newspapers of the day kept referring to as his "diminutive size". In basketball, he was a four-year starter, and captained the team his senior year. He was a three-time All-State selection, and won the state scoring title as a junior with 204 points in 17 games. He was seventh in scoring in New England that season. In 1941-42, he set the state free throw record, as his 30 free throws broke the record of 22 held by UVM's Anso Belardinelli. In baseball, he pitched and played third base for the Green Mountain Conference Co-Champions of 1940 - referred to as the best baseball team in SMC history. He hit for a career .333 average, and was 4-2 on the mound. He was a two-time All-State selection, and was team captain as a senior.
