Phil was the first great goaltender in the modern era of Saint Michael’s men’s ice hockey, and still holds the program record for career wins (37) after graduating with marks in nearly every category. His standards for career saves (2,320) and minutes (4,307:59) lasted until 2002, and his long-enduring consecutive shutout minutes record stood until the 2018-19 season. Phil joined the team in 1983-84, the Purple Knights’ second season since returning to varsity status. Saint Michael’s finished over .500 during his career despite the program’s fledgling status, as Phil appeared in 76 of a possible 87 games, drawing 75 starts. While starting 15 games as a rookie, he averaged a career-high 32.7 saves and backstopped the Purple Knights to their first shutout of the modern era, 4-0 versus Plymouth State University on Jan. 31, 1984. Phil was the undisputed No. 1 netminder as a sophomore, starting 19 of 22 games. He turned in another milestone in 1985-86, becoming the first Purple Knight goalie to pick up a point, notching an assist, and helped the program make its first postseason appearance, turning in 37 saves in an ECAC North quarterfinal. Phil went on to start 41 of a possible 45 games over his final two seasons, highlighted by a career-best .886 save percentage and 31.2 saves in the winter of 1985-86.
