Simas was a key figure for the New England College Division Championship Team of 1951; the only team in New England, and one of only 17 in the nation, to go unbeaten and untied that year. He was counted on heavily for his output both on offense as a tailback, and on defense as a defensive back. Offensively, he gained 1,164 yards during his three-year career, despite a leg injury that limited him to only 274 yards his senior year. As a junior in 1950, he set the all-time state scoring record for a seven-game season by collecting 73 points. Defensively, he led a defensive backfield that allowed only 314 passing yards for the entire 1951 season; an average of just 52.3 yards per game. The opposition's completion rate was only 34%. That year, the Purple Knights were ranked #2 in the nation and #1 in New England against the pass. An honor student and member of Who's Who in 1952, he was a three-time All-State selection.
