One of the men’s soccer program’s early greats, Humberto later became a leading medical expert in his native Honduras. Humberto scored seven of his team’s 18 goals as a sophomore rookie in 1962, adding one assist for 15 points in just seven games. As a junior, he recorded three goals and four assists to land on WCAX-TV’s inaugural all-state team. Despite a shift from forward to defense in 1964, Humberto repeated as WCAX Vermont All-State, netting one goal to finish with 11 goals, five assists and 27 points over 26 career games. Humberto was inducted into Alpha Epsilon Delta, the National Health Preprofessional Honor Society, and was a member of the Pre-Medical Society, International Club and Holy Name Society. He graduated cum laude before earning his doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in 1969. Humberto was a founding member of the Latin American Association of Immunology in 1982, appointed Honduran adviser for science and technology in 1992, and was commissioned by President Callejas to create the Honduran Council for Science and Technology in 1993. He was later appointed national commissioner of science and technology, which carried the rank of secretary of state, and has served as the Honduran Health Ministry’s HIV adviser, adviser to the minister of health, and executive secretary of international cooperation.
