Joe entered SMC as a freshman in September, 1941, and lettered in baseball and basketball in his first year. "The Whip'" as Joe was called at that time, was referred to in the Burlington Daily News as being one of SMC's all-time great pitchers at that point in history. Joe enlisted in the Marine Corps in the fall of 1942, and served for five years in World War II, returning to campus in September, 1947. For the rest of his college career, it was strictly baseball, as Joe lettered in each of his last three seasons. He served his team as captain in 1950, and led the Knights in hitting in 1948 (.363) and 1949 (.344). After graduation, he returned to SMC as Director of Purchasing, and coached the baseball team from 1970-75. He is third all-time in wins (34), behind Hall of Famers Ed Markey '51 and George 'Doc' Jacobs.
