Although he was only 5'8" and 126 lbs., Jack was the cornerstone for the great football teams of the late 1940's and early 1950's. The football program grew tremendously during his four years, yet despite all of the change, Jack was the one true constant. The sport was reinstated in 1946-47, after a 14-year varsity hiatus. Running primitive single and double wing offenses, Jack was the team's starting halfback -- the most versatile position at that time because the quarterback was primarily used asa blocking back. After two seasons of this style, charter Hall of Famer Doc Jacobs arrived and took over the football team in 1948. Jacobs moved to a "T" formation offense, and brought in great backs like Hall of Famers Billy Hart '51, Pete Plourde '52, and Frank Simas '52. Nevertheless, Jack was a starter throughout those years, and led the Knights in total yardage for three straight seasons! He was a three-time All-State selection, and was named All-New England in his senior year. He was also the subject of a national AP story on college football's smallest starting halfback!
