The longest-tenured and winningest head coach in Saint Michael’s men’s lacrosse history, Paul led the Purple Knights to four NE10 semifinals, was a legendary goalkeeper during his playing days, and was instrumental in growing the sport, founding the Vermont-based VTribe lacrosse club. During his eight years (2004-11) guiding the Purple Knights, Paul registered a school-record 61 wins and helped lay the foundation for the team to go 22-10 with two more NE10 semifinal appearances in the two seasons immediately following his departure. The 2011 NEILA Coach of the Year was a four-time All-America goalkeeper at Cornell University in his playing days, helping the Big Red to two national runner-up finishes. Paul stood fourth in NCAA Division I history in career saves upon his graduation, and his 85 stops in four games during the 1988 NCAA Tournament remain a record. Paul won gold with the U.S. National Team during the 1990 and 1994 FIL World Lacrosse Championships and was part of the selection committee for the U.S. team that competed at the 2006 championship. Paul died in 2013, but his memory lives on in the program through the Coach Paul Schimoler Player of the Year Award. Paul holds membership in numerous halls of fame, including as a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame’s 2019 induction class.
