Monroe was an outstanding guard for the Purple Knights, whose strength, leadership and courage may have been more valuable to his team than his impressive play on the court. He came to Saint Michael’s in the fall of 1988, after a highly-decorated career at Philadelphia’s West Catholic High School, where he was named All-City after posting the highest season scoring average (27.2 ppg) in the city’s storied Catholic school history. After a promising freshman season in 1988-89, a serious medical condition caused him to sit out the 1989-90 campaign. Monroe came back healthy and strong in 1990, and would lead his team in scoring over the next three seasons. He averaged 15.7 points per game in 1990-91, and 17.1 points per game in 1991-92. Monroe enrolled in graduate school at Saint Michael’s and was able to use his final year of eligibility in 1992-93. He averaged 16.5 points and six rebounds per game, led the Knights to a winning season, and laid the foundation for the decade of success that followed. Monroe was a two-time All-Northeast-10 Conference and All-State, All-Division, First Team selection, and graduated ranked 10th on the College’s all-time scorer’s list with 1,288 career points (13.7 ppg average). At his induction, he is 19th in the Knights’ 1,000-Point Club, with only three men ahead of him on this historic list having played in fewer career games than he did.
